Although Carl has only been with Agile for a short amount of time, joining the business in October 2021, he’s already made quite the impact.

Having known Agile Technical Solutions owner and Managing Director, Nick Baines, for several years, Carl’s a new but familiar face to the team.

So, we catch up with him to find out more about his experience and why he enjoys the challenge of working as a Technical Manager.

Carl, could you tell us a little about you. What experience do you bring to the role?

Sure. I’ve got a lot of experience working in IT and systems management as well as many years of experience working as a technical support engineer. This means that I can confidently cover all grounds as a Technical Manager for Agile.

Most recently, I worked for a large civil engineering company where I’d been an IT Systems Manager for almost eight years. Before that, I worked as IT Manager for one of the UK’s biggest commercial printers. Working in-house in a senior capacity, I understand exactly what internal technical managers expect from an external IT provider, which is very useful in my current role.

Why did you choose to work for Agile?

You could say it was a meeting of minds. I’ve known Agile, and Nick in particular, for quite a few years from when we worked together on various IT projects. We’ve stayed in touch. Nick was already looking for somebody he could trust to help manage IT projects on behalf of clients. When he contacted me, I was looking for a new challenge and so the time was right.

What does the role of Technical Manager involve?

I am very new to the role of Technical Manager, but my role is to help make sure that client IT projects are delivered within scope and on time.

No two days are the same. I work across multiple projects, and so one day, I could be working on a cloud solution, the next managing an installation or helping to resolve a critical issue.

What do you enjoy most about working as a Technical Manager?

Technology never stands still, so there’s always something new to learn. I also get a lot of satisfaction from solving problems and managing technical projects.

It’s hard to choose, but if I had to, I’d say that IT infrastructure, network and server projects are what I enjoy the most, working out the best software and hardware solution for clients.

I also like the team here at Agile, and that’s important to me. Everyone supports one another, and in turn, works hard to deliver the best possible client service.

Could you tell us a little about your life outside of work?

My kids are all in their twenties now, so I have a little more time than I used to have. As well as spending time with my family, I love relaxing with my friends over a pint in my hand-built garden bar (complete with optics and beer pumps). My bar has become a bit of a ‘must-have’ amongst friends and family, and I’ve now built quite a few for people!
